Hexagon bolts with shank to DIN 931 and ISO 4014 carry the thread only at the end, while the plain shank lies in the joint face of the clamped parts. The category holds 564 versions, threads from M 5 to M 14, widths across flats from 8 to 22 mm and thread lengths from 16 to 34 mm.
The shank takes transverse load and keeps the thread flanks out of shear. Selection follows the clamp length so that the thread does not end inside the joint face. Stock is steel of property class 8.8, plain or zinc plated.
Shanked bolts are fitted in frames, hinges and linkage points where the joint is loaded across the bolt axis. In steel and machine construction they are chosen wherever the plain shank should guide the hole. Clamp length is set so that at least one thread pitch projects beyond the nut.
