Pipe Marking to DIN 2403
Pipe marking to DIN 2403 assigns every line to the medium it carries. The carrier names the medium in plain text, an arrow shows the flow direction and the colour assigns the medium to its group, aqueous media in green and air in grey. In a data centre the flow and return of the water-glycol loop, chilled water, condensate and compressed air run close together, usually in redundant pairs and in identical pipe sizes. Only the marking shows at a closed valve which of the parallel circuits has actually been isolated.
Markers belong at branches, upstream and downstream of valves, at wall and ceiling penetrations and wherever a line becomes visible again after a concealed run, always facing the operator. Run number, the flow or return designation and the note on the glycol mixture belong on the same carrier. No products are listed in this category yet; the range is being built up.

Structure of the Marking
Information on a pipe marker
| Item | Content | Value when working on the circuit |
|---|---|---|
| Medium | name in plain text, such as cooling water or condensate | no confusion between lines of the same size |
| Flow direction | arrow pointing with the flow | flow and return can be assigned |
| Colour group | colour according to the group of the medium | fast orientation in the service route |
| Run and circuit number | circuit identifier, A or B where redundant | the correct isolating device is chosen |
| Additional and warning note | glycol mixture, hot surface, plant pressure | protective measures before opening |
Typical Applications
- Manifolds and headers in the plant room
- Pump set, filters and isolating valves of the cooling loop
- Risers and penetrations between floors
- Connection of cooling manifold and rack in the white space
- Free cooler, dry cooler and make-up line
- Compressed air and condensate lines sharing the same route
