Shut-Off, Control and Safety Valves

Pressure Reducers and Make-Up Valves

A pressure reducing valve cuts a high inlet pressure down to a constant outlet pressure and holds it, even when the inlet fluctuates or the draw-off changes. In a data centre it sits in the make-up line that tops up a closed cooling circuit with water or water-glycol, and upstream of components with a limited pressure rating. The group holds 991 items: water regulators with a built-in gauge, versions in brass and in stainless 1.4404, cast stainless regulators in 1.4401, the DRV 200 series and potable water reducers from Riegler and Resideo Braukmann.

Two distinctions drive the choice. Relieving regulators bleed off an outlet pressure that has climbed too high; non-relieving versions, marked NB in the type code, do not and need separate relief. The adjustment range has to match the circuit: stock covers 0.5 to 8, 1 to 15, 0.5 to 15, 1.5 to 12 and 3 to 50 bar, with connections from G 1/4 to R 1 1/2 and in NPT. For feeding from the public water main there are DVGW-approved versions.

How to choose Pressure Reducers and Make-Up Valves

What matters when choosing: properties, comparison and typical applications.

How to choose a pressure reducer

↕ Range matters more than the maximum - The target outlet pressure should fall near the middle of the range. Stocked spans are 0.5 to 8, 1 to 15, 0.5 to 15, 1.5 to 12 and 3 to 50 bar.
⚙ Relieving or non-relieving - Relieving regulators vent excess outlet pressure through the diaphragm. Versions carrying NB in the type code do not.
✓ Material follows the circuit - Stainless 1.4404 and cast 1.4401 fit without restriction; brass versions only where the whole circuit is single-alloy.
⚑ Treat potable water separately - For feeding from the public main the range includes DVGW-approved regulators as well as versions for cases without that requirement.
⚡ Connection and body size - G 1/4 to R 1 1/2 plus NPT versions, and a size 1 cast stainless body covering 1.7 to 17.5 bar.
↻ Include a gauge - Versions with a mounted gauge show the outlet pressure directly. Without one, the setting stays guesswork.

Typical applications

  • Topping up closed cooling circuits from the water main at a constant fill pressure
  • Pressure maintenance upstream of expansion vessels and pressurisation units
  • Protecting heat exchangers and cold plates with a limited pressure rating
  • Constant inlet pressure for dosing and treatment equipment on the cooling water
  • Reducing main pressure at fill and flush connections during commissioning
  • Supplying pneumatic actuators in the cooling periphery with a steady control pressure
