Choosing the right Norgren components
Valve, cylinder or air preparation?
A pneumatic circuit is built from three building blocks. Air preparation with filter, regulator and lubricator conditions the compressed air and sets the working pressure. The directional valve controls where the air flows - designations such as 3/2, 5/2 or 5/3 state the number of ports and switching positions. The cylinder finally converts the compressed air into motion.
Which cylinder design fits?
The design follows force, stroke and available installation space:
- Tie rod cylinders: classic design, rugged and easy to retrofit
- Profile cylinders: compact extruded body with integrated sensor slots
- Mini and round cylinders: for small forces and tight installation spaces
- Lintra rodless: long strokes with a short overall length
- Bellows and impact cylinders: for special duties such as clamping or forming
Pneumatic or hydraulic?
Pneumatic cylinders run on compressed air and suit fast, clean movements at moderate forces. Hydraulic cylinders use oil and deliver much higher forces with precise positioning under load, but require a hydraulic power unit.
Mind the key parameters
The decisive figures are bore diameter, stroke length, port size and mounting style; for valves add actuation type, coil voltage and nominal flow. Note the complete model designation from the nameplate so that replacement parts and seal kits match the installed equipment exactly.
Which product group do you need?
| Criterion | Cylinders | Directional valves | Air preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task | Generate motion | Switch the air flow | Condition and regulate the air |
| Medium | Compressed air or hydraulic oil | Compressed air | Compressed air |
| Typical designs | Tie rod, profile, mini, Lintra cylinders | 3/2, 5/2, 5/3, safety valves | Filters, regulators, lubricators, combination units |
| Control | Via the upstream valve | Solenoid, pilot operated or lever | Mechanical or proportional |
| Selection criteria | Bore, stroke, mounting | Port size, voltage, flow | Port size, filter grade, pressure range |
| Application | Handling, assembly, forming | Actuator control, safety functions | Component protection, stable pressure |
| Spare parts | Seal kits, mountings | Solenoid coils, seals | Filter elements, regulator kits |

Frequently asked questions about Norgren
Which country does Norgren come from?
Norgren is a British manufacturer of pneumatic and motion control components. The brand goes back to founder Carl Norgren and today belongs to IMI plc, based in the United Kingdom.
Which products does Norgren offer?
The range covers directional and solenoid valves, pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders in round, compact, profile, tie rod, mini and bellows designs including the rodless Lintra series, air preparation with filters, regulators and lubricators, fittings as well as pressure switches, safety valves, accessories and seal kits.
What do designations such as 3/2 or 5/2 directional valve mean?
The first number states the count of ports, the second the count of switching positions. A 3/2 directional valve therefore has three ports and two positions and typically controls single-acting actuators, while a 5/2 valve is used for double-acting cylinders.
What are the Norgren Lintra series?
Lintra, Lintra-Plus and Lintra-Lite are rodless cylinders. The carriage travels inside the cylinder body, which allows a long stroke within a very short installed length. Lintra-Plus is additionally available with plain bearing or roller guides to take lateral and moment loads.
What belongs to a Norgren air preparation unit?
A preparation unit consists of a filter, a pressure regulator and optionally a lubricator - at Norgren in the Excelon, Olympian Plus and R07/B07/L07 series. The filter removes particles and condensate, the regulator keeps the working pressure constant and the lubricator supplies lubricated components with oil mist.
Are Norgren components suitable as spare parts for existing equipment?
Yes. Through fluidics-equipment.com you can obtain Norgren components both for new projects and as matching replacements, including seal kits and mountings. Please quote the complete model designation from the nameplate so the replacement part fits the installed equipment exactly.
