When thin sheets and small add-on parts are bolted together, every millimetre of head height counts. This hexagon head bolt M 6x100 to DIN 931 has a head only 4.0 mm high and is tightened across flats of 10 mm. Of the total length of 100 mm, 18 mm carry the thread while the remaining 82 mm form a plain shank. The shank bears against the drilled hole and takes shear loads instead of passing them through the thread flanks. The material is steel of property class 8.8 with an electroplated zinc coating.
