Here pilot oil is drawn internally but returned externally, so the pilot stage works against its own unpressurised return. The variant earns its place wherever several valves share one return line that still carries residual pressure. The external pilot return then runs separately to tank without pressure. In power units fitted with a return filter or a cooler this is the usual arrangement.
